How lemonade turned into Lemon Aid (sponsored post)

I have been able to do some fantastic things for others thanks to this blog. From donating baby gear to those in need to providing dozens of holiday gift donations every year to giving away thousands of dollars’ worth of products month after month — it has been a philanthropic dynamo.

Sunlight dish soapSo when Sunlight dish soap asked if I wanted to partner on a charitable initiative, very cleverly called Lemon Aid by Sunlight, it was a no-brainer.

Not only would I get to work with a brand that’s beloved by Canadians (its Lemon Fresh 950ml bottle is the top-selling dish soap in Canada), but I’d also be able to give my kids a chance to be part of something that helps others.

Instilling a sense of kindness and selflessness is one of my top priorities as a parent. Things like this are a step in the right direction.

But when faced with a huge ask like “which charity do we want to support?,” my kids were overwhelmed. We narrowed it down by focusing on animals rather than people. A nice, local animal shelter or local chapter of the Humane Society seemed like a good fit.

And then I broke my ankle and this project got put on hold for several weeks. By the time I was back on my feet — literally — all hell was breaking loose down south because of Hurricane Harvey.

We talked about how our lives would be impacted by a storm that flooded our house, our neighbourhood, our school. Where would we live? How would we get food? What if we lost everything that was special to us?

Miss Q in particular got right to work. Even her besties got involved decorating our Lemon Aid by Sunlight stand, and it was up to the kids to decide how much to charge. (Though we did ixnay The K Man’s $5/glass thought…)

Lemon Aid by Sunlight

We put a call out to our neighbours and we sold out of every last drop of lemonade that we made (which was A LOT!).

We had a few spills along the way and it sure was one sticky Lemon Aid stand by the end of the day, but the clean-up was easy afterwards thanks to — you guessed it — Sunlight.

Donating to Sandals Foundation

And then, as I wrote this post, Hurricane Irma devastated many parts of the Caribbean — a place where so many of our family memories have been made. When I told the kids that Turks & Caicos was hit, they told me in no uncertain terms that we needed to do whatever we can to help one of their favourite places on earth.

We knew it was the right thing to do, and having donated to the Sandals Foundation before, we felt confident doing so again.

The kids had made $55.75 for hurricane victims. We tripled the amount with a personal donation.

I’m pretty sure it won’t be my kids’ last Lemon Aid stand.

GIVEAWAY

Sunlight wants to give one lucky winner (who is age of majority in Canada) the opportunity to have their own Lemon Aid stand — plus cleaning-up goodies from Sunlight — to support a clause close to his or her heart. To enter, click on the recipe link to tell me what the ingredients are in a homemade bubbles recipe, and also be sure to tell me which charity you’d choose to support if you won.

While Facebook comments are always appreciated, those on the blog post itself will only be accepted for contest entry. Prize has no cash value. By accepting prizes, winners agree to release Sunlight, Henkel Canada, Mommy Gearest and all affiliates and agencies from any and all liability. Winners understand they must provide full mailing addresses and phone numbers for shipping purposes to a third party for prize facilitation. Contest closes Sept. 15, 2017 at 11:59pm ET.

DISCLOSURE: This post was inspired and sponsored by Henkel Canada. It was up to us to choose a charity and execute the Lemon-Aid stand. All opinions, suggestions and donations are our own (and our neighbours’).
